The Giving Garage seeks to build a better community by helping those who all too often fall through the cracks of society. By that, we mean special needs adults who are no longer eligible for many services or programs previously provided by schools, hard-working families who find themselves in a dire situation due to natural disasters, kids in underserved communities that don’t have access to positive recreational activities or an avenue to job training, and the list goes on. We want to improve our community by reaching out to these people and helping them in small but meaningful ways.
Listed below are the programs we building to that end. If you would like to donate to support a particular program or volunteer to help in some way, please contact us at Info@TheGivingGarage.org.
Crisis Closet: The Crisis Closet is a supply of dry goods—clothing, food, toys, personal hygiene products—that can be provided to families suffering through a catastrophic event such as a flood, fire, or tornado. We hope to eventually expand to being able to provide temporary housing as well.
Hot Wheels, Kool Treats: The Giving Garage is restoring vintage and classic ice cream trucks that will be used to provide ice cream and cold treats to children in under-served communities in Shreveport-Bossier and the surrounding areas.
Special People United in Dreams: The SPUDs program is designed to bring special needs teens and young adults together to help them socialize. This will include support groups providing time for games, arts and crafts, sports, and other activities catered to specific needs.
V8 Academy: The Giving Garage is building partnerships with automotive garages and other businesses to host apprenticeship opportunities for students who do not desire a four-year degree, but want to have careers that offer financial stability. This program will provide assistance with living and educational expenses for students during their training.
Healthy Neighbors: The Giving Garage will use donations to this program to work with a medical debt relief company to purchase portfolios of debt from hospitals and doctors in our community and pay off those debts for deserving families. Every dollar raised will go to help people right here in Shreveport-Bossier.
